Combatting Veteran Isolation: Join Project Refit NC’s “Crayons by the Fire”
Jimmy King and I have been working with Project Refit for a little over a year now. I don’t think either of us realized just how life-changing it would be. Project Refit isn’t just another charity. It’s a lifeline for veterans. It also supports first responders who are silently carrying battles most people never see.Their mission is simple but heavy. They aim to combat isolation. They work to break the stigma of addiction and mental health struggles. They fight like hell against the heartbreaking reality of 22 a day.

Twenty-two heroes… every single day.
We refuse to accept that. We refuse to sit still while our brothers and sisters suffer in silence. That’s why starting the first North Carolina chapter meant so much to us. We pour our hearts into every conversation and every message. We cherish every person who shows up needing someone to sit beside them in the dark.
Every first Saturday of the month, we host Crayons by the Fire at the Moose Lodge in Rocky Mount. It’s a fireside chat where walls come down. This is where real healing begins. No judgment. No pressure. No pretending you’re “fine.”
Just community. Just honesty. Just people reminding each other that their story isn’t over.
If you’re a veteran, a first responder, a spouse, or a caregiver, this space is for you. It’s also for you if you’ve ever felt alone or unseen.
Come sit with us by the fire.

Your life matters. Your voice matters. You are needed here. And you are never, ever alone.
